History Behind the Freedom Ring™
In 2003 Bruce was confined to a wheelchair due to diabetes. The simple act of standing had become impossible without great difficulty and assistance. His wife Dona was not strong enough to help Bruce get in and out of bed from his wheelchair, and they were advised that Bruce needed to be in a care center where he could receive the assistance he needed. Knowing that Bruce did not have long, his family began seeking a way for Bruce to stay in the comfort of his own home. It was then that Dona contacted Bart, her brother-in-law, to see if he could engineer a device that Bruce could use to get himself in and out of bed using his own strength.
A retired master machinest and designer, Bart began working on a device that was both robust and easy to use. It attached to the bed and utilized a steering wheel at its top that Bruce could use to pull himself up to a standing position and then maneuver to a bed or chair. The device worked wonderfully, and allowed Bruce to remain in his home and with his family. Home care nurses helping Bruce thought the device was so effective that they encouraged Bart to pursue patenting and marketing his device.
Bart's son Boyd is a machinest and mechanical designer who has extensive experience in designing and manufacturing mechanical devices. Incorporating "Design For Manufacturability" principles, Boyd enhanced the device by replacing its steering wheel with a steel ring. A feature for mounting the device to a bathroom wall was also added, which aided in mobility to and from the toilet and shower. After some real-world testing and a few design iterations, Bart and Boyd arrived at an optimal design and the device was patented. It was appropriately named the Freedom Ring.
Once the device was ready for marketing, Darren, a friend and colleague of Boyd's, joined the team. Darren brought with him an extensive list of overseas manufacturing contacts, as well as experience as a buyer in the Aerospace field. He quickly set up manufacturing in China and facilitated the delivery of the company's first run of production units.
Enhanced Mobility's line of products are designed and manufactured to offer the most robust and dependable assist products on the market. In contrast to competitors' devices, the Freedom Ring's design allows its users to engage the device in a way that best leverages their own strength. By placing the ring directly in front of users (as opposed to on the side as is the case in other devices) the Freedom Ring makes it much easier for a mobility-challenged individual to pull themselves up. This is but one of the features that make the product a prime solution for its intended audience.
